Have you ever used foam blocks to carry your snowboard / skis on the roof of your car? We rent a car to leave the city to go to the mountain, no rental cars are the racks. I know there are foam block configurations for kayaks and canoes and all that, I was wondering if anyone ever did with a snowboard and where to buy some of that foam? Can you get in a hardware store or something?
Sorry ... I looked at your other questions to see where you live. In New York there are some places you could get blocks of kayaking. I do not know for sure one.

In theory it should work. Just make sure the strap is really tight.
depends on what vehicle you have and how many things you have with you, while I usually hang my board at the back of the truck, foam blocks? sounds like a good idea to protect your equipment, where to find it difficult, I would like to try a computer store, they have huge blocks of foam round Wheeling computers, many big enough for a snowboard .
