Learning Fractions

I posted this in another category as well, but I'll try here too. He complains that he did not need to learn fractions, because it never goes to use them in the "real" world. I said fractions are used every day in the real world and he wanted a few examples. I said that you use fractions when you're cooking, he said he never goes to cook and if he does, he will use a measuring cup. So I told him that if he ever wants to do the work of wood or metal, it will use fractions. He said, yes, it's my dream job. I said that you work with fractions when you talk about your gas tank (I have a quarter of the gas tank), he says he needs to know quarter, half and three quarters full. I said that you work with fractions when working with money. He says I'll never know what 3 / 8 of a dollar is. What then? How can I explain the need for fractions? I'm beginning to wonder if this is necessary at all.

Let there be a public service or is not beside the point. There are all sorts of things we learn at school just to develop our intellect and understanding of the world, not because we necessarily use the information or specific skills later.

He needs to learn that fractions, it helps develop a good logical thinking and is absolutely essential for success in higher education in mathematics. It is also only part of developing a better understanding of numbers and how they are all connected. It's about being educated, having a certain amount of knowledge and skills, regardless of whether you use it or not. That you have no way of knowing as a child.

Whether your son is trying to rationalize his desire not to study something, it is difficult to find. They are excuses, not reasons. Find a good resource as the key to fractions, to help with it and once he is comfortable with them, he's reluctant to learn more. Do NOT get into arguments or discussions with him about why it is important.

Regarding the importance of real life every day, I used a large number of fractions in cooking: recipes doubling or even do something like 1.5 times the recipe because I did not have enough a particular ingredient to double it; understanding how fractions work is required to report to work and find out Better Buys. There are also plenty of jobs out there that use fractions (scientists, business people, many high-tech jobs and more). There are probably many things that we use our skills to the fraction we do not even think about it simply because we do not need to write it all to cope.

This is not really important - in my opinion - but to explain the importance of education in general - not only in mathematics teaching you numbers, but the critical thinking that is vital in the "real world "- fractions is seen in any profession involving math or science - fractions are involved stocks, bonds, Wall Street .... they are involved in credit cards (hereinafter fractions are percentages) ... etc. For fractions of interest why do not you google fun "activities and practice them with your child - involve baseball, basketball, etc. .. pizza Her room is composed of fractions. Give him an incentive - give it a house "challenge" 3x a week and a price for some "overflow" of these challenges - Use your imagination - instead of explaining with words, use your actions =)
