The SEC is now the College Basketball Top Conference
As Yogi Berra said: "It's like deja vu all over again."
The Florida Gators beat Ohio State for the NCAA championship. Looks like we've heard it somewhere. Oh, yes, less than three months, the Gators beat the Buckeye to win the Order of the Crown of football. Now the same thing happened in the championship of college basketball.
But this victory, the basketball Gators win means a lot more.
Why?
Well, for one thing, the second championship of college basketball right for the Gators. They demonstrated convincingly that they are the best team in college basketball this year.
But, more importantly, the win puts the Gators in the same class as one of the best teams in college basketball ever. Nobody has won back-to-back championships in college basketball since Duke Blue Devils made fifteen years ago.
Before this, we must return to the UCLA teams late 60s and early 70s.
I will not pretend that Florida is the best team ever. Maybe yes, maybe not. But we must recognize that the victory of consecutive championships is much more difficult now, when he was 15 years ago.
Why?
There are two main reasons. First, there is more parity in college basketball. Secondly, the best players are much more likely today to go pro before the end of four years in college.
It is impossible and unfair to compare teams from different eras, but the Gators should be part of any conversation about the best team ever.
But the most important thing about the Gators Basketball Championship second is that it establishes the Southeastern (SEC) conference that the conference's basketball best college.
Not only does the SEC have the best men's basketball team in Florida. They also have the basketball team the best women in the Tennessee Lady Volunteers.
Flights Lady won the NCAA women's fashion in still more dominant than the Gators won in men. And the Lady volumes have a claim even stronger argument that they are the basketball team the best women ever.
In fact, in truth, there is no argument on the Lady Vols. They are the dominant women's basketball program. Not only this year but all the time. Their legendary coach, Pat Summitt led the Lady Vol to most NCAA titles (7) and 26 consecutive appearances in the Sweet 16. She has won a record 948 games. Amazing!
You want history? The SEC has too. Kentucky has had some down years, but they continue to lead the nation with the most wins of all time in NCAA (1949), winning percentage, NCAA Tournament bids and the presence of the fan. See Best of all time NCAA record Basketball .
Until this week, I always ranked the ACC conference basketball best overall. In fact, I have not updated my site to reflect new realities. See SEC Basketball .
But the time has come to recognize the change of custody. College basketball is better and more competitive than ever. The ACC and Big East conferences are two basketball with great stories. The Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac 10 are good too.
But history is not enough. Over the past two years, ACC has had 0 teams in the Final Four. The SEC had three. If you look at the last two of the NCAA.
