Roman Costumes

Roman CostumesHow can the difference between Greco-Roman dress different?

As in, who are Greek and the Romans? Also, what are the defining characteristics of each costume?

No more details ... lots and lots of them. I'll see what I can tell you from memory.

Most ancient cultures of this region were essentially the same type of clothing because it was convenient for the climate in that form.

You did not mention if it was peasant costume, royal robes or senatorial or armor you want to know the distinction.

Greek clothes were usually carved from a rough cloth and dresses had fewer layers of drapery and effects as the Romans.

During the time the Romans conquered the Greek state, the culture has been assimilated and customs have merged iincluding types of clothing.

Armor is a little different though. The Roman armor tended to be less restrictive and bulky to allow for greater mobility and faster literally walk. There was no Roman soldiers equipped with chainmail armor and banded scale where the Greeks used over plywood (chunks to cover large parts of the body). pre-Roman Greek Armor was heavier and there was a skid plate on the bridge of the nose more than the Roman helmets, Roman helmets which had hinged cover plates to cover the ears and jaw.

An excellent site for examples of Roman costumes (it is very authentic) is: http://www.larp.com/legioxx/

Also, searching for simple frescoes and paintings (done in this age) Macedonian armies of Philip II. For examples of Roman clothing, Research for the Fayum Portraits ... granted, you especially see a bust of the person in the paintings, but you get an idea of how they were decorated in comparison.

Roman clothing has finer elements of the plate where the Greek clothing consists mostly different shades of colors in the whole garment panels.

You will see that the years passed, Egyptian, Greek, Phoenician and Hittite armor was very similar.

Roman clothing was simply more elegant, practical and built to better say it in simple terms.

and all I know is that the Greeks and Romans were not bears

They could be made of wool or cotton, according to the season, and were held together by pins in the shoulders and a belt.
In winter, they wore something similar to the gown, a lighter material called himation cotton, which was draped like a toga. You can make a difference, because it was worn by women and men, and not as bulky as a Toga.

clothes for women in Greece were made of the same material, but went to ground and were pinned at the shoulder. They are often returned to the waist.

Romans wear the tunic, (although the wealthiest citizens wore togas) that they got from the Greeks. This was made equipment bleeched or color, light and color for the richest citizens.

The Romans precious feathered cloak of "which is something they wore and the Greeks did not. This was, of course, feathers.
