Starting Solids

Starting SolidsInformation on how to eat solid foods

Breast milk is all your baby will need until at least four months. There will come a time when breastmilk no longer provide all of your baby's nutritional needs. Term babies will start to require iron from other sources of 6-9 months of age.

Some babies who are not started on solid foods before the age of 9-12 months may have a great level of difficulty accepting solid foods. This is actually a development stage when your child starts eating solid foods - as he is now grown.

When to start

The ideal time to start eating solid foods is when the baby shows interest in leaving. Some babies are interested in solid food when he is on the plates of their parents, from four months. In 5-6 months, most babies reach out and try to seize food. When the baby starts to reach for food, it's usually time to go ahead and give it a little.

Sometimes it can be a good idea to start food earlier. When a baby seems hungry or once weight gain is not continuing at the desired pace, it might be good to eat solid foods at three months. It is possible however, to continue breastfeeding alone and the baby less hungry or growing more rapidly. Babies fed breast digest solid foods better and earlier than artificially fed babies because breast milk contains enzymes that help digest fats, proteins and starch. breastfed infants also had a variety of different tastes in their lives, since the flavors of many foods the mother eats goes to her milk.

Introducing Solids

When the baby begins to take solid foods at age 5-6 months, there is very little difference what he starts will or what order it is introduced. You should however, avoid spicy foods or highly allergenic foods at first, but if your baby with the potato on your plate, you must yield if it is not too hot. Give your baby foods that seems to interest Let your baby enjoy the food and do not worry too much about how you first, as much of it can be on the floor or in her hair anyway.

The easiest way to get iron for your baby at 5-6 months of age is giving him meat. Infant cereal has iron, although it is poorly absorbed and can cause your baby to get constipated.
