Film Review - GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra - Review
9.5 out of 10
Yo Joe! Stephen Sommers' big screen adaptation of the popular toy property is exactly what it should be is a big, strong, fun, action-packed, movie popcorn, kick ass summer that captures perfectly the minds of cartoons and comic strips of 80. I can tell you right now that all the bad reviews you are reading reviews that have clearly not the call of the American heroes. Fortunately for us, do Sommers. Whether you're a fan of GI Joe (I) or just as a big-budget action spectacles, you can enjoy every moment of pulse defeating The Rise of Cobra.
Because of the negativity around GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra (check my box office prediction here ), I feel the need to defend it. Let's start with the biggest complaint I have seen so far. The film is stupid and has no plot. This could not be further from the truth. There is much history here and they even go out of their way to the flesh of back stories for some characters. Make no mistake, this is not the best golf ever, but GI Joe was never meant to be Shakespeare. The basic plot is this; NATO soldiers Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayons) are responsible for guarding a suitcase filled with a dangerous weapon based on new technology nanomite which was developed by a dealer weapons, industries in March. Although transport of the case, they are attacked by a mysterious mercenaries led by the Baroness (Sienna Miller), then saved by a secret agency called GI Joe who is led by General Hawk (Dennis Quaid). Hawk then called to join his team of super soldiers to keep the world safe from evil mercenary group known only as Cobra. That's it. Hence, it is the impressive action scene after action scene impressive as the Joes attempt to thwart Cobra in their quest for world domination. More than enough history for what is supposed to be a fun summer blockbuster.
Rumors abound that the film was terrible and that Paramount pulled the film director Stephen Sommers because of it. The rumors have since been demolished and after seeing the film, I know for certain they were not true. Sommers made a film that plays to the strength of the brand while remaining accessible to new fans. He staged some amazing action sequences in the film and I must say it is his best film to date. I know that is not saying much considering this is the man behind the god awful Van Helsing, but he is also responsible for both the first mummy movie (great popcorn movies) and underappreciated Deep Rising seriously. Just like Michael Bay (Transformers 1 and 2), Sommers will probably never get the respect he deserves criticism (he has critics in this regard), but box office receipts for his films speak for themselves themselves.
The best thing about Joe is incredible, visceral action sequences. My biggest complaint about many action movies today (I mean you Transformers) is that sometimes you can not even tell what happens. This is not the case here. The characters never engulfed in an orgy of bullets and explosions. Because of all the Joes different actors involved in each sequence, it is important to note each and Sommers it brilliantly. It reminded me of how skillfully the action scenes in the Star Wars original t.
